LWC Baseball takes series opener from Cumberland, 8-3
DOUBLEHEADER TODAY - LWC Baseball hosts Cumberland (TN), starting at 3pmCT, at Egnew Park, inside Lindsey Wilson Sports Park, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY
By Matthew Wurzburger. News from Lindsey Wilson College
COLUMBIA, KY (23 Mar 2017) - Lindsey Wilson baseball scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, defeating Cumberland (Tenn.) 8-3 on Thursday night at Egnew Park.
James Doubet earned his first-career complete game on Thursday - working the full nine innings while allowing three runs. The senior from Williamsfield, Illinois scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out five.
Three Blue Raiders (16-13, 3-1 Mid-South Conference) collected multiple hits against the Phoneix (16-17, 3-4 MSC). Steven Paredes recorded a game-high three hits, and Jayden Jackson and Jan Carlos Ortiz both tallied two hits.
Lindsey Wilson stole a season-high five stolen bases, led by Ortiz's three swiped bags.
The three-run first was one of two big innings from the Blue Raiders, who also put up a crooked number in the bottom of the fifth.
Ben Giland started the scoring in the opening frame with a one-out triple that scored Paredes, who reached on a leadoff walk. Giland then came home to score on a single by Jackson. The next two Blue Raiders reached to load the bases before Antonio Dorado lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Ray Gonzalez, who courtesy ran for Jackson.
With a three-run cushion, Doubet rolled through the middle innings - allowing one baserunner in both the fourth and second innings.
Lindsey Wilson's bats hung another crooked number on the board in the home half of the fifth.
Paredes started the scoring rally with a one-out single to right field, becoming the first Blue Raider to reach base since the first inning. A base hit by Tanner Moore and an intentional walk to Giland loaded the bases for Jackson, who belted a grand slam over the left field wall.
Jackson finished the game with five runs driven in - tying his career high.
The Phoenix placed a dent in the Lindsey Wilson lead with two runs in the sixth inning. With runners on the corners, Austin Krajnak tripled into the left-center gap for Cumberland's first runs of the game.
Lindsey Wilson got one run back in the home half of the frame on a solo shot by Paredes - his second homer of the season.
Doubet worked around single hits in both the seventh and eighth innings before surrendering a run in the ninth inning. He struck out Steven Hollis to end the game and notched his fourth win of the season.
Travis Dohr took the loss for Cumberland, allowing seven runs over five innings.
