Michael Peter (Mike) Irby, 79, Burkesville, KY (1937-2017)

He was a native of Shanghai, China, and a resident of Cumberland County, KY, at the time of his death. He was former Mayor of Burkesville, an educator, retired Principal of Cumberland County Elementary School, business owner, and member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Mr. Michael Peter "Mike" Irby of Burkesville, KY passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the Cumberland County Hospital in Burkesville, KY, having attained the age of 79 years, 8 months, and 4 days.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 2pmCT in The Memory Chapel of Norris-New Funeral Home, 601 N Main Street, Burkesville, KY. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery in Cumberland County, KY. The family will receive friends after 3pmCT on Saturday, February 11, 2017 until the funeral hour on Sunday at the funeral home.



Michael Peter (Mike) Irby, 79, Burkesville, KY (1937-2017)


He was born in Shanghai, China on Saturday, June 5, 1937. He was the son of James Fate and Marie Tam Irby. He died Thursday, February 9, 2017, in Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY, at the age of 79 years, eight months and four days.

He was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and attended Highland Chapel United Methodist Church. He was Former Mayor of Burkesville, an Educator, Retired Principal of Cumberland County Elementary School, Business Owner, and member of the Retired Teachers Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Weldon "Corky" Davis, and his nephew, Michael Carl "Mike" Davis.

He is survived by:
  • His wife: Deborah Murphy Irby of Burkesville, KY

  • His children: Stacy (and Craig) Bohne' of Louisville, KY: Micaela (and Eric) Riemer of Glasgow, KY; Laurel Irby (and David Feuston) of Burkesville, KY

  • His step-children: Anthony (and Elizabeth) Gilbert of Bowling Green, KY; Beth (and Corey) Cash of Burkesville, KY

  • Sister: Molly Davis of Burkesville, KY

  • Grandchildren: Haley Bohne', Connor Cash, Landon Gilbert, Finnegan Rhys Feuston, Emma Gilbert, Evan Cash, Maddox Crewe Irby-Feuston, and Rhett Michael Riemer

  • Mother-in-law: Nancy Murphy of Burkesville, KY

  • Plus a host of nieces and nephews
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Mike Irby Scholarship Fund (601 Megan Lane, Glasgow, Kentucky 42141).

Norris-New Funeral Home, 601 N Main Street, Burkesville, KY, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.

Burkesville Mayor Keith Riddle, at the counter of his barber shop in Burkesville, KY, took a moment yesterday to remember a predecessor, his high school teacher, and a basketball hero, Mike - Michael Peter Irby - who passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017. The three term Mayor recalled Mike Irby as one of the best ever basketball players in Cumberland County History. "He was one of the quickest passers who ever played here," he said. "And I had him as a math teacher when I was a student at Cumberland County High School in 1965." Mayor Riddle recalled.
