Mattie Lourene Garrett Syra, 87, Metcalfe Co., KY (1929-2016)

She and her husband, Stanly Syra, who survives, had celebrated their 70th year of marriage just four months and three days ago. She was the matriarch of a highly regarded South Metcalfe County, KY, family. She leaves 23 direct living descendants. She was a homemaker and member of the Cedar Flat Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Mattie Lourene Syra age 87 of Edmonton, KY passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, KY.

Funeral services will be held 2pmCT, Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Butler Funeral Home, 201 East Street, Edmonton, KY, with burial in the Metcalfe County Memorial Gardens, Edmonton, KY. Visitation will be 4pm-8pmCT, Friday, December 30, 2016, and after 9amCT, Saturday at the funeral home.


Mattie Lourene Garrett Syra, 71, Metcalfe Co., KY (1929-2016)


She was the daughter of the late Holland and Irene Hensley Garrett. She was born November 4, 1929. She died December 28, 2016, in Glasgow, Barren County, KY, at the age of 87 years, one month, and 24 days.
BR> She was a homemaker and member of the Cedar Flat Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband Stanley Syra, with whom she celebrated 70 years of marriage on August 25, 2016, and the following:
  • Two daughters: Barbara Shaw and Judy, wife of Jimmy Reece, all of Edmonton, KY

  • Seven grandchildren: James, Stan and Stephen Reece, Jared and Andy Shaw, Amy Irwin and Julie Harper

  • Fourteen great grandchildren
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Maxie Garrett; a great grandchild Dustin; and a son-in-law Wendell Shaw.
