Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton promotes entrepreneurship Small business is the backbone of the American economy. Jenean Hampton traveled across Eastern Kentucky this week promoting entrepreneurship to high school students. The visits began in Wolfe County on Monday and ended in Pike County on Friday. In Wolfe County, Lt. Gov. Hampton attended and spoke at Launch Day: Students' Flight into Entrepreneurship. The event focused on students at Wolfe County High School hearing from local entrepreneurs, representatives from the Kentucky Innovation Network, and Lt. Gov. Hampton as they learned more about the power of entrepreneurship. Lt. Gov. Hampton shared her personal story with students, discussed the significance of entrepreneurship for Kentucky's economy, and promoted the first annual Lt. Governor's Entrepreneurship Challenge (LGEC). On Friday, Lt. Gov. Hampton traveled to Pike County in order to observe the KVEC 2016 High School Regional Entrepreneurship Challenge and give awards to the top winners of the competition, which took place at the University of Pikeville. Students and organizers of the KVEC event surprised Lt. Gov. Hampton at the conclusion of the challenge by giving her the first annual Magellan Award. The Magellan Award is given to individuals who embody innovation and who champion a spirit of entrepreneurship. After having lunch with participants, Lt. Gov. Hampton made her way to Pike Central High School to share her personal story with students and promote the LGEC. "Small business is the backbone of the American economy," said Hampton.
