Makayla Smith, Michaela Walker urge Non-Smoking at Chamber By Linda Waggener A smoke free Adair County was the subject presented by two Adair County High School students at the Columbia Adair Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting Tuesday, October 11, 2016. They are among several students partnering with Lake Cumberland District Health Department Health Educator Jelaine Harlow in the effort to educate the community and gather support. Makayla Smith and Michaela Walker told the audience, "It's the smoke, not the smoker", as they presented statistics to back up their desire, and that of a majority of Adair Countians, to make the place smoke free. Makayla Smith, ACHS senior, daughter of Pat and Angie Smith, was the recipient of the 8th grade PRIDE award, awarded Leader of the Week by WBKO, applied for and received a grant to teach fifth graders about the effect of media on their decisions, been in 4-H leadership for six years, leads her church youth group and has been in vocational nursing for three years. She plans to attend Lindsey Wilson College. She takes great pride in her community. Michaela Walker, an ACHS senior, is the daughter of Dana and Bryan Walker. She is current president of HOSA, SADD and a member of FFA and past JR Historian. She's a member of PEP, FCA, GRIT and is a varsity cheerleader. She is a senior in the Adair Leadership program, is involved in Kentucky's Domestic Abuse Council as a sign language interpreter and is the current Distinguished Young Woman for Adair County 2017. She serves on the mission team at her church and plans on becoming a nurse. Students also volunteered at the Smoke Free Adair booth during Downtown Days and will do so again at the TJ Columbia Heath Fair on October 22, 2016. This story was posted on 2016-10-11 17:24:23
