Gertrude A. Burton, 78, Adair Co., KY (1937-2016)

She was a native of Adair County, KY, and a resident of Menard County, IL at the time of her death. She a member of a large, respected Adair County, KY, family. She was the daughter of the late Walker and Dorothy Cowan and the widow of Wayne T. Burton. She leaves 40 and two on the way direct living descendants, and many family members in Adair County, KY, including nine siblings - two sisters and seven brothers. Her final resting place will be in Illinois. She worked for many years at Bunn-o-Matic and retired as a cook from Sunny Acres Nursing Home. She currently worked as a private home health care giver.

Gertrude A. Burton, 78, of Tallula, Illinois, died at 5:40pmCT, Saturday, October 8, 2016.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 10amCT, at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 South Fifth Street, Springfield,Illinois, with Rev. Clifton Cowan officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Pleasant Plains, IL. Visitation will be 4pm-7pmCT, Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Staab Funeral Home.



Gertrude A. Burton, 78, Adair Co., KY (1937-2016)


She was born November 22, 1937, in Columbia, Adair County, KY. She was the daughter of Walker and Dorothy Cowan. She died Saturday, October 8, 2016, in Tallula, Menard County, KY, at the age of 78 years, 10 months, and 16 days.

She married Wayne T. Burton on January 28, 1956 and he preceded her in death on December 21, 2002. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Doris Cowan; three sisters, Carol Luttrell, Peggy Fudge and Patricia Montgomery; seven brothers, Cashius, W.T., Kenny, Leonard, Sam, Luther and Gilbert Cowan; and one great-grandson.

Gertrude worked for many years at Bunn-o-Matic and retired as a cook from Sunny Acres Nursing Home. She currently worked as a private home health care giver.

Survivors include:

  • Three daughters: Kathie (Dennis) Stevens of Pleasant Plains, IL; Clara (Clifford) Klauzer of Tallula, IL; and Reda (Bill) Sandlin of Corbin, KY

  • Three sons: Larry (Vickie) Burton and Kenneth Burton all of Springfield, IL; Thomas (Chasity) Burton of Pertersburg, IL

  • Three sisters: Leoda Curry and Glenna Cowan both of Columbia, KY; Dora (Charlie) Willis-Ames of Petersburg, IL<

  • Seven brothers: Calvin (Bernice), Vaughn (Connie), Phillip (Sheri), Clifton, Roger, Donnie (Phyllis) and Darrell (Lisa) Cowan all of Adair County, KY.

  • Fourteen grandchildren

  • Twenty great-grandchildren with two on the way
