KSP trooper, TFC Billy Gregory, talks to CMS sixth-graders

By Calen McKinney, Public Information Officer
Campbellsville Independent School District

Campbellsville Middle School sixth-graders recently learned what it's like to be a law enforcement officer.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Billy Gregory, who serves as public affairs officer at Post 15 in Columbia, came to speak to students about his job.

Gregory said KSP troopers enforce traffic and criminal laws all around Kentucky.

There are 35,000 police officers in New York, he said, but the KSP is only allowed to have 1,100 patrolling in Kentucky.

Gregory became a police officer in 1991. He was an officer for seven years and then became a detective. He now serves as a public relations representative for the KSP.

KSP troopers wear lots of equipment every day, Gregory said, including a gun, bullets, flashlight, radio, pepper spray, baton, handcuffs and more.

Gregory said KSP troopers are sworn to always enforce the law, and can make an arrest even when they aren't on duty.

He also discussed the terrorist attacks on September 11, and how troopers were called to help at the scene.

CMS sixth-grade teachers hope to invite a community leader to speak to their students once a month.

Those interested in speaking at the school can call the CMS office at (270) 465-5121. - Calen McKinney
