CES Wings Express students sample apples

By Calen McKinney Campbellsville Elementary School Wings Express students recently sampled several kinds of apples. And, after the taste testing, they agreed they like the red delicious ones the best.

Angie Freeman, expanded foods and nutrition program assistant at Taylor County Extension Office, recently came to Wings Express to read to students and talk to them about eating healthy.

Freeman read "Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie," and told students how pies are made. She also discussed the many different types of apples and asked students which ones they have sampled before.

Students were given three kinds of apples to sample, including royal gala, red delicious and granny smith.

Wings Express is a program to help students with homework and other activities. Students receive help with reading, math, science, technology, social skills and more. They also participate in activities to learn about nutrition.

Wings Express students stay at school from 3 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Fridays for activities.

Students are given a snack and then divided into groups to participate in programs that best fit their needs.

About 90 students will participate in the Wings Express program.

Amanda Barnett is Wings Express director.

For more information about the program, call Barnett at (270) 465-4561 Ext. 31141.
