Joyce Coomer: Driving in town

Experience following driver who appeared to be drunk or inattentive led writer to suggest center stripes are needed on City Streets - like Hurt Street.

By Joyce Coomer

I came down Hurt Street, from IGA to Guardian St., then down Burkesville Street to the square, a little bit ago.

I couldn't decide if the driver of the car in front of me was drunk, not paying attention to where they were going, or just plain didn't know how to drive as they were weaving from one side of the street to the other, mostly driving dead center.

I followed them down Burkesville Street to the square and was amazed that they stopped to allow traffic already on the square to go by, and then managed to get off the square onto Campbellsville Street without running into anything.

As the driver apparently paid somewhat more attention to driving on Burkesville Street - they didn't straddle the white line on the two northbound lanes, just drove with the passenger side tires riding the white line and a little to the right of that - I wondered if putting white lines to divide lanes on city streets would help drivers notice that there are TWO lanes of traffic on city streets, as there are on state and county roads.
