Four local first responders were at Adair County Middle School Wednesday to provide an invaluable service to eighth grade students. Fortunately, there was no emergency for the paramedics and EMTs to navigate, as this visit was aimed more at preventing urgent medical situations.

Roger Cundiff, Daryl Flatt, Tammy Strange, and Chad Wheat - all with the Adair County Ambulance Service - visited with Lou Ann Carter's practical living/career studies class for a lesson that served two purposes.

First of all, students learned important, life-saving skills like CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. Each student was able to practice and receive feedback from the experts on hand.

"You never know when you might need to do this," Cundiff told the students. "It could be the difference in life and death."

Discussions about medical career paths were also prominent, including education requirements and earning potential.

"Your hope is that if there's ever an emergency and these students are there, they will be able to help the person until someone else arrives," Carter explained Wednesday morning. "I also hope that it makes some of them interested in a career in the medical field."

This is the second year Carter has invited Adair EMS to speak to her students, and she hopes to continue the practice in the future. "The students seem really interested, which is always good to see," Carter said.
