LWC Men's Soccer hosts Roosevelt in season opener tonight

By Matt Wurzburger

The No. 23-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team opens the 2016 season Thursday night as they host No. 22 Roosevelt (Ill.) at Walter S. Reuling Stadium Thursday at 7pmCT.

Last season, the Blue Raiders went 14-5-2 and 5-2 in the Mid-South Conference, eventually losing on penalty kicks to Indiana Wesleyan in the opening round of the NAIA National Championship.

Lindsey Wilson returns three starters from 2015 including Aleksi Pahkasalo. The senior midfielder led the Blue Raiders in goals (24), assists (8) and points (56) while earning Third Team NAIA All-American status.

Thursday marks only the second all-time match between the two teams. Last season, Lindsey Wilson defeated the Lakers, 5-0, behind a Pahkasalo hat trick.

Roosevelt defeated Marygrove (Mich.) 1-0 on Aug. 20 to start their season. The Lakers won in the second overtime period on an Evan Trychta goal.

Last season, Roosevelt went 16-4-2, winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles before losing in the opening round of the NAIA National Championship.

Kickoff is set for 7pmCT at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Holloway Dr., Columbia, KY
