Admission is $5.00 at the door with children 12 and under admitted free

By Terry Partin

The South Central Kentucky Outdoor Expo opens its doors for the seventh consecutive year here in Columbia, Kentucky, where the unique event originated. Constantly growing and ever changing, the expo offers new and expanded attractions for the people of our community and beyond. Doors to the public open at 9amCT at the Adair County High School John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY 42728.

Expo began in 2010 as small trade show
The expo began in 2010 as a small trade show with an inspirational message delivered at the conclusion. Public response demanded more, so the second year saw exhibitor numbers double with a steady increase in attendance. (More on history)

In 2012 expo coordinators forged a partnership with the Kentucky National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) State Chapter, and the expo became the host of the Kentucky State Turkey Calling and Still Target Championships. These events brought multi-time world and national champions and a host of top level competitors from all over the eastern United States to Columbia to compete for cash prizes and to qualify for national and world title events. This year's competition will feature competitors from at least ten states with some traveling from as far away as Florida. (More on history)

In 2015, a cooperative agreement with the Stuttgart Arkansas Chamber of Commerce brought the Kentucky State Duck Calling Championship to Columbia. This sanctioned event serves as a qualifying event for the World Championship held in Stuttgart, Arkansas, in November. This year's duck calling contest has expanded to include divisions for Meat Duck and Intermediate calling.

Andrew Green of Highways & Hedges Ministry will speak

The speaker at the conclusion of this year's expo will be Andrew Green of Highways and Hedges Ministry. Past speakers include Gary Miller of Outdoor Truths Ministry, Brenda Valentine, known as the "First Lady of Hunting," Gordon Whittington, the editor-in-chief of American Whitetail Magazine and co-host of North American Whitetail television, Mark Menendez, Bass Masters Elite fisherman, and Harold Knight of Knight and Hale Game Calls.

Expo seminar series includes on on Ticks & Zika carrying mosquitoes

The expo seminar series is second to none. Seminar topics have historically been dominated by hunting and fishing experts. This year, in an effort to educate the public about two relatively new health hazards, there will be a seminar on the deadly tick spread allergy to red meat know as Alpha-gal which is being diagnosed locally and the mosquito transmitted Zika Virus recognized by the World Health Organization as a Public Health Emergency. Presenters will be on hand to educate the public about symptoms and the severity of these new threats and to recommend measures that are effective for repelling the ticks and mosquitoes that are responsible for the transmission of Alpha-gal and the Zika Virus. Additional seminar topics include Bass Fishing Tips, Hunting the Mega Buck, and Waterfowl Banding. (List of Seminars

Long list of exhibitors this year

This year's exhibitors will be bringing a wide array of products and services of interest to the entire family. There will be hunting products, fishing lures, fishing rods, taxidermy, handmade knives, jewelry, television personalities, ATVs, boats, food plot materials, cameras, minerals, and much more.

There will also be an S3DA Archery shoot and children's activities from Christian Archery Ministry Outreach (CAMO) and Ducks Unlimited. (2016 List of Contributors)
