Pennsyltuckian longs for those old burley fields back home

Pining for his old little bit of heaven: Barnett's Creek. Recalls wonderful neighbors of both kinds: Amishmen and Wesleymen. And remembers assisting fellow Waggener-Walker Newspaper sally-forth editor in his father-in-law's tobacco patch in Glens Fork.
Epistle which follows inspired by: Photo 67914 Tobacco showing effects of record rainfall

By Jackson Brower

This field of burley looks mighty pretty to this estranged Pennsyltuckian.

Although I didn't personally grow the stuff, I had a small tobacco allotment operated mostly by Amishman Ervin Schlabach, who happened to be born on the exact same day as me, December 11, 1948.

I have fond memories of hauling Ervin and his tobacco crop to market in Somerset.

I also let fellow Barnett Creek resident Stanley Rich hang his crop in our barn. Both Stanley and Ervin were fine neighbors to have out in the suburbs of greater Pellyton.

I don't I know many times Stanley pulled our VW bus out of the creek, but he was always very nice about it and wouldn't accept even a nickel.

I only worked in a tobacco field once helping Neal Gold harvest his father-in-law's crop out in Glensfork.

Although we had fun, I remember that it was some of the stickiest, most grueling work I have ever undertaken.

Hope all the Adair County farmers have good crops this year, and all indications are that they will.

We are having a great growing summer up here in Pennsylvania as well. - Jackson Brower
