Columbia/Adair County Airport Board Chairman Chris Janes, accompanied by longtime board member Buddy Sewell, presented - and secured - two modest proposals to the Adair County Fiscal Court which will allow the facility to better serve schools of Adair and Metcalfe Counties, and will give a big boost to economic development and tourism.

The first proposal was for the county to join with the City of Columbia to provide a culvert and fill to nearly double the number of parking spaces at the airport, and provide bus turnarounds for Aviation & Aerospace Academies at both Adair County High School and Metcalfe County High School.

The second proposal was for the county to provide funding for insurance for a courtesy car which will be furnished by the Franklin Family Group automobile agencies. The estimated cost of the insurance will be, depending on the vehicle furnished, from $400 to $800 per year.

The estimated total cost of materials for the parking lot/bus turnaround is $3,500 shared between the city and Adair County. Both entities would provide equipment and operators for any work needed on site. The vote for the turnaround, to provide up to $2,000 in funding, came on a motion by Magistrate Billy Dean Coffey (District 5), with a second by Terry Hadley (7), with County Judge Executive Mike Stephens and Magistrates Harold Burton (1), Daryl Flatt (2), Sammy Baker (3), Perry Reeder (4) and Greg Caldwell (6) joining in affirming the action.

The vote for the insurance stipend was unanimous, on a motion by Magistrate Terry Hadley, with a second by Greg Caldwell, and CJE Stephens and Magistrates Harold Burton, Daryl Flatt, Sammy Baker, Perry Reeder, and Billy Dean Coffey joining them in the final vote.

The property is jointly owned by the City and the Adair Fiscal Court.
