CU awards nearly $200,000 in scholarships to EIT recipients A total of 3,390 teachers have been honored since the program's inception. McKinney Coordinating Director, Campbellsville University CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - In an effort to promote graduate teacher education across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Campbellsville University has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarship assistance to the recipients of the 30th annual Excellence in Teaching Award. The Excellence in Teaching awards program began in 1987 with assistance from Earl Aaron and the Ward, Cundiff and Aaron Memorial fund. The purpose of the program is to recognize the quality teaching and learning taking place in the school systems throughout Kentucky. Through the awards program, Campbellsville University recognizes and honors teachers in each grade level (preschool, elementary, middle grades and high school) as selected by their school districts. A total of 3,390 teachers have been honored since the program's inception. For the 30th annual ceremony Saturday, May 21, 199 teachers are being recognized from 70 school districts. In honor of the 30th year of the Excellence in Teaching awards program, Campbellsville University will be offering a $1,000 scholarship to each award recipient to be used toward any online master's degree program at CU. "We want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of these outstanding Kentucky educators by offering them a scholarship to start, or possibly finish, their graduate studies," said Dr. Shane Garrison, dean of online education. "We believe a little help can go a long way in helping these fine teachers reach their academic goals." In addition, Campbellsville University will allow this scholarship offer to be shared with others. Award recipients can recommend a fellow teacher, colleague, family member or friend for a $1,000 "Pay It Forward" scholarship. Garrison said, "We know that many of our EIT winners have already completed their graduate work in education or school administration or in another academic field of study. They might not be able to take advantage of the scholarship, but they know another up and coming teacher starting out. "Maybe a new teacher in the district or a colleague from another school who could really use a scholarship to help them jump start their graduate work. They can take their scholarship and Pay It Forward as a gift." Furthermore, every participating superintendent and school principal have the ability to refer an outstanding educator for the "Pay It Forward" scholarship. "The Excellence in Teaching program rises and falls on the wonderful partnership we have with district superintendents and principals," stated Garrison. "They are the ones who recommend high-performing teachers from their schools. Without them, the EIT program would not work. Therefore, we wanted to get them involved in the Pay It Forward spirit as well." Superintendents and principals can refer an educator in their district who did not win one of the three EIT awards, but who has still proven to be excellent in the classroom. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is July 29, and students must begin their academic coursework either in August or October of this year.
