Lewiston Bound! - LWC Baseball advances to World Series Lindsey Wilson baseball walks off against No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett, 4-3, to advance to Avista NAIA World Series By David Gerhart News from Lindsey Wilson Athletics LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (Fri 20 May 2016) - The third-seeded Lindsey Wilson baseball team used a walk off wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett, 4-3, in the championship game of the NAIA Opening Round - Lawrenceville Bracket on Friday morning. With the victory, the Blue Raiders earned a berth to the Avista NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho for the second-straight season. The Avista NAIA World Series begins on May 27. Victor Nazario led Lindsey Wilson (42-23) going 2-for-3 at the plate, while driving in two runs including the game tying run. Ryan Harper went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run. Jan Carlos Ortiz was the final Blue Raider with two hits in the game and he also scored one run against the Grizzlies (57-6). On the mound Aaron Doughty (8-6) picked up the win pitching the final five innings without surrendering a run and allowing just three hits. Scott Sebald started the game pitching four innings giving up three runs - two earned - on three hits, while posting eight strikeouts. Georgia Gwinnett got on the board first as their first two batters of the game reached base without recording a hit. With runners on second and third base, Josh Merrigan blooped a double into left field that was just missed by a diving Alec Salcedo to put the Grizzlies up 2-0. Scott Sebald was able to settle down and strikeout the next three batters to get out of the first inning. In the bottom of the second inning, the Blue Raiders looked to get on the board as the loaded the bases with two outs, but Lindsey Wilson was unable to push a run across. After a one-out single and stolen base from Marcus McCorkle, William Paschal doubled out to left field to score McCorkle, which gave Georgia Gwinnett a 3-0 lead to end the top of the fourth inning. Jan Carlos Ortiz started the fourth inning for Lindsey Wilson with a single to centerfield. With the run-and-hit on, Brandon Munoz singled through the right side of the infield allowing Ortiz to advance all the way to third base. Ryan Harper drove in Ortiz from third with a sacrifice fly down the left field line brining the Blue Raiders within two runs. Lindsey Wilson was unable to cut into their deficit as they trailed 3-1 after four innings of play. The Blue Raiders were able to pull within a run in the home half of the sixth inning after Victor Nazario laced a two-out double to the gap in left-centerfield to score Harper from first base making it a 3-2 game after six innings. Heading into the bottom of the ninth inning and trailing 3-2, Harper led off the inning for Lindsey Wilson with a double to right field that skipped away from a sliding Grizzly right fielder. With Caleb Ratzman coming into to run at second base for Harper, Nazario sent a single to centerfield scoring Ratzman and Nazario moved up to second base on the throw. After a pair of walks, the Blue Raiders had the bases loaded with no outs. Georgia Gwinnett was able to cut a runner down at the plate on a fielder's choice to keep the game tied a three. With Aaron Ashton at the plate, the Grizzly pitcher threw a wild pitch that skipped between the catcher's legs and Ray Gonzalez - who was courtesy running for Dustin Woody - scored on the play to give Lindsey Wilson a 4-3 victory over Georgia Gwinnett. Following their loss in the first game of the NAIA Opening Round - Lawrenceville Bracket, the Blue Raiders won five-straight elimination games to earn a bid into the Avista NAIA World Series.
