Jon Halsey: On observing Peace Officers Memorial Day

President has proclaimed May 21-25 as "Peace Officers Memorial Day," May 15, 2016.

By Jon Halsey
Personal commentary

I am sadden by the lack of attention that continues to be given to the week in May that has been designated by Public Law and first signed by President John F Kennedy and reaffirmed every year since by each succeeding President as "Peace Officers Memorial Day."

This year as in every year since 1962, the President has directed: "the Governors of the United States and its Territories, and appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day.

I further encourage all Americans to display the flag at half-staff from their homes and businesses on that day." He further declared the week of May 15 thru May 21 as Police Week.

Given the negative press directed toward these public servants who put their lives on the line for us, I think that this year especially the public should be made aware of this important tribute. My flag was proudly displayed at half-staff all day today. Here is the link to the Presidents Proclamation for this year: Presidential Proclamation
