Buchanon Park, 9222 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY By Charles Balcom News from Lindsey Wilson College BOWLING GREEN, KY (Fri 29 Apr 2016) - The Lindsey Wilson softball team saw their 25-game win streak come to an end on Friday at the hands of Cumberland (TN) in a winner's bracket game in the Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament held at Michael O. Buchanon Park. The sixth-ranked Blue Raiders (41-11) defeated Cumberlands (Ky.) by a 3-1 margin to start the tournament, but fell to a hot-swinging Cumberland team in the next round 10-5 to slip into the consolation bracket.v Lindsey Wilson now faces Pikeville (KY) in an elimination game on Sat 30 Apr 2016, at Michael O. Buchanon Park, 9222 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY. Lindsey Wilson 3 - Cumberlands 1 The Blue Raiders edged out an upset-minded Cumberlands (21-30) team 3-1 to start the day. Both teams scored in their opening at bats with each team plating one run. The Patriots scored after Kaylee James led off the game with a single, was sacrifice bunted over to second, and then took third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single by Madison Monnin. Lindsey Wilson scored their opening run of the tournament when Jenna Firestein scored all the way from second on a fielder's choice groundout to first to tie the game at 1-1. The second inning and top of the third went by scoreless before the Blue Raiders plated two runs in the bottom of the third. Brittney Graves led off with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by Firestein. Cassie Kooker then singled home Graves to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 2-1. Callum Pilgrim followed with a bunt single, and while the throw went down to first trying to get Pilgrim, Firestein caught the defense napping and rounded third and raced on home for the 3-1 lead. The Blue Raiders later had runners on second and third with one out, but a Lindsey Wilson attempted to extend their lead in the fourth after loading the bases with two outs but another fly out brought the inning to an end. The Blue Raider offense did not manage much from there, but the two-run lead would be plenty for starter Lyndsey Parden who cruised through the final six innings in the circle without much opposition from the Patriots. The senior allowed just three base runners between the second and sixth innings, two via hits. Cumberlands attempted to put together some late magic with a pair of singles in the top of the seventh, but Parden retired the final two batters with a strikeout and pop out to end the game and preserve the 3-1 win. Parden improved to 22-3 with the victory, allowing just six hits with one earned run and nine strikeouts. Firestein and Pilgrim accounted for four of the Blue Raiders' seven hits in the game. Six of those hits came off of Cumberlands' starter Kacy Russell, who took the loss after allowing three runs. Lindsey Wilson 5. Cumberland 10 Lindsey Wilson met sixth-seeded Cumberland (15-31) in their next game. The Phoenix, who had just upset third-seeded Georgetown (KY) prior to facing the Blue Raiders, kept the momentum rolling into their next matchup as they jumped all over Lindsey Wilson, taking a 4-0 lead after the opening inning. Cumberland scored their first run of the game on a groundout, followed by an RBI single by Kassydi Montgomery for the 2-0 lead. Tessa Tomaselli then tripled to score the next run and later scored on a Blue Raider fielding error for the 4-0 lead. The Phoenix were right back at it in the second after back-to-back bunt singles started the inning. After a two-out walk loaded the bases, Lindsey Wilson got out of the jam on a fielder's choice to end the threat. The Blue Raider offense struggled to get things going again as they managed just one hit in the opening three innings. Cumberland doubled their lead in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of Blue Raider errors. Imani Torregano reached on a one-out error and moved to third on a wild pitch and groundout, which should have ended the inning. Madison Gonzalez then singled home Torregano to make it 5-0, chasing Blue Raider starter Casey Bryan from the game. Emily Gray then entered to pitch but was unable to fare much better against the hot-hitting bats of the Phoenix as Montgomery doubled on the first pitch she saw to score the second run of the inning. Pilgrim then committed a throwing error on a routine ground ball to extend the inning and allow another run to score before another single scored the final run of the frame to give Cumberland an 8-0 lead. The Blue Raider offense finally showed some signs of life in the bottom of the fourth after three-straight singles by Pilgrim, Sydney Fourman and Bailey Mize, combined with a pair of Cumberland errors saw Lindsey Wilson cut the lead down to 8-2. But three pop outs later put a quick halt to that momentum. The fifth and sixth went by scoreless before Cumberland tacked on two more runs on a single by Madison Gonzalez to push the lead to 10-2. Lindsey Wilson attempted to rally in the seventh with three runs, but the deficit was too large to overcome as the Blue Raiders fell 10-5. Bryan (18-7) took the loss allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 3-2/3 innings. Fourman, Kooker and Mize each had two hits in the loss. The loss ended Lindsey Wilson's 25-game win streak which began back on March 22 against, ironically, Cumberland. This story was posted on 2016-04-30 03:59:01
