BOWLING GREEN, KY (Mon 18 Apr 2016) - Campbellsville University's Cassidy Scantland was named Mid-South Conference Women's Golf Champion of Character, conference officials announced tonight at a banquet at Bowling Green Country Club.

The junior from Greensburg, KY is the third Champion of Character from Lady Tiger Golf, the first coming in 2008-09 with Cheris Evans Young and the second with Olivia Parrott in 2014-15.

"Our team has watched the transformation with amazement and pure joy," said her coach, Kim Goodin. "She has redefined who she is as a leader, teammate, and golfer. What she brings to the table now is more than golf skills. She is leading devotionals, bible study and prayers for the entire team that demonstrate the amazing change in her.

"She overcame obstacles in the fall that challenged her faith but she stood firm. As we all do, she makes mistakes, but now it is met with courage and humbleness rather than frustration or anger. We are so grateful as a team for her conversion."

Champions of Character is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) initiative that recognizes athletes who mirror the core values -- integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

"Cassidy has obviously proven what she can do on the golf course again this year. Now to be selected by all the AD's in our conference as the Champion of Character award recipient speaks to her character and servant spirit away from the golf course. Congratulations Cassidy!"

Every nominee is required to supply a letter of recommendation from their coach and also a personal letter to the conference athletics directors, who form the voting committee. In part, this is what she said:
"Respect is exhibited daily, whether that is to my coaches, teammates, teachers, or parents. The Bible tells us to respect our elders and love our neighbors, and I try to honor God's word through my daily living by the words I choose and the actions I take. I respect people by being kind, complementary, honoring their efforts, and by being sincere with promises that I make to them. Respect is a crucial part of life, and it is singlehandedly one of the most important characteristics humans need to possess. It is of great importance to me, and I intend for my life to reflect the respect I show for others, whether it be in my daily living or through my sport.

"When most people hear the word integrity, they only think of honesty. However, integrity consists of so much more than just honesty. A woman that exhibits integrity would be honest, have good moral principles, and good character.

"While demonstrating responsibility in all areas of my life, I feel that I show this characteristic the most on the golf course. Golf is an individual sport and a team sport simultaneously. My score is dependent solely on myself, but the outcome of the team depends on the joint effort of myself and my other teammates. Off the golf course, I feel that it is my role as a leader to practice with focus and intention so that my game can be at its peak for the team. On the course, it is my duty to play the best that I can and shoot the lowest score possible. This is my opportunity to do my part and help out my team to the best of my abilities.

"One can be a servant leader to anyone, but first and foremost, I try to serve God. I was recently saved, so from that moment forward, I have tried to center my life on serving Him. He has blessed me beyond measure and given me so many opportunities.

"I feel that I display great sportsmanship in every competitive event. Before I was led to God, I had anger issues on the golf course. I was beyond competitive. I actually despised my playing partners, only because my desire to win was greater than my desire to be nice to my competitors. That did not exemplify sportsmanship. Once I was saved, I had a better."
