JIM: The wife does a lot of baking

By JIM

Nigh onto threescore years ago, my folks ran a grocery store in downtown Royville, over in Russell County. An older gentleman (his age then being about what mine is now) lived across the road. He, as did most of the nearby residents, popped into the store with some regularity to buy some item or another.

This fellow, however, had a taste for alcohol. On occasion, when no other source was available, he'd walk across Highway 80 to the little general store and purchase several bottles of pure vanilla extract. (By FDA edict, the "pure" signified it was at least 70 proof.) With eyes averted as he paid, he would murmur, "The wife does a lot of baking."
