Senate confirms Homeplace as Kentucky's Outdoor Classroom

By George Kolbenschlag
News from Homeplace on Green River

The Kentucky Senate approved a resolution February 29 supporting Homeplace on Green River as Kentucky's Outdoor Classroom. The designation is another step forward for the historic 227 acre farm and will encourage significant opportunity for growth both in programing and funding.

Kentucky Senators Max Wise (District 16, representing Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor and Wayne counties) and Senator David Givens (District 9, representing Allen, Barren, Metcalf, Green, Monroe and Simpson counties) introduced the resolution which passed unanimously.

Extensive plans are underway to offer opportunities to students from pre-school through college to experience outdoor learning activities at Homeplace. Scouts and other groups already make frequent use of Homeplace as an outdoor learning lab, and last year's annual Fall Heritage Festival drew almost 2000 attendees. This coming April 23 the farm is holding its first Plow Day and Spring Festival.

Homeplace on Green River has been in continuous use from its settlement by the Tate family in 1803 to present and has supported a variety of agricultural products both plant and animal. It is a joint effort of Adair, Green and Taylor counties and is operated and maintained mostly by volunteers. There are no full-time paid employees.

Homeplace on Green River, 5807 New Columbia Road (State Highway 55), Campbellsville, KY,is adjacent to the Tebbs Bend Civil War campground and battlefield and the Taylor County Nature Reserve. It is a working farm, is on the National Register of Historic Places and its historic buildings are being restored.
