Campbellsville MS students study writing via hamburgers

By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville Middle School students recently studied writing by eating hamburgers. In Paige Cook's eighth-grade language arts classes, students learned to write effective paragraphs via "hamburger writing," also known as 3.8 paragraphs.

A 3.8 paragraph is a paragraph that breaks down a topic into three points that illustrate exactly what the topic means.

The 3.8 paragraph gets its name from the three points made in eight sentences.

Cook compared the 3.8 paragraph to the parts of a hamburger.

The bun is the topic sentence.

A tomato is the first reason and example.

The lettuce on the hamburger is the second reason and example.

The hamburger patty is the third reason and example.

And the bottom bun is the conclusion sentence.

On Friday, March 4, Cook's students got to eat hamburgers - with all the fixings - as a way to end their unit.
