The League of Kentucky Sportsmen honored four individuals in a special ceremony at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, KY. At the Salato Center, there is a brick walkway where bricks are placed with the names of the League's chosen "Sportsmen of the Year" awards engraved on the bricks. The recipients were Robert Dickey (2012), Chet Hayes (2013), Stevie Pelston (2014) and Fred Kirsch (2015). Stevie Pelston, the winner of the 2014 award, is from Adair County. Stevie Pelston has been an active member of the Adair County Wildlife Conservation Club for several years and has served on the Board of Directors. He is especially known for his involvement with the young and disabled sportsmen in the district. Stevie has helped develop, organize and run the first Kids Outdoor Day, the Columbia Squirrel Rifle Shoot, archery program, and the Youth Turkey Hunts. He has been very involved in 4-H shooting sports as a certified coach for the program. In 2014, Stevie coordinated a spring turkey hunt with five Wounded Warriors. This program provided these men the opportunity to turkey hunt with special needs equipment and the presence of a hunter to help call and assist them in the hunting experience. All five men were able to harvest a turkey during this program. Stevie has been very instrumental in fundraising and volunteeringfor the club and has done an exceptional job of promoting Fish and Wildlife in the fourth district. - Barry Stotts District Four Fish and Wildlife Commissioner This story was posted on 2016-03-06 06:55:09
