KY Afield Outdoors: Wading staff for dangerous currents

By Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, KY - Those of us who wade rocky streams for smallmouth or tailwaters for trout sometimes bite off more than we can chew.

An eddy on the other side of the stream looks inviting and the more you stare at it, the more you want to cast there. The only problem is a waist-deep run with strong current lies between you and the enticing water.

You begin crossing the stream, but about half way, the current begins to push hard against your legs. You barely lift your foot and the current pushes it out from your body, nearly causing a fall. You look back and realize it will be just as hard to get back to where you started, as it will be to get to the other side of the stream. You are stuck.

A wading staff will save your bacon in this situation.

'Work that ought not be did?' - Cat Psychology study needed?

2018-07-20 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
One of my jobs on our fertile one-acre farm is to feed the livestock. Standard breakfast is at 6amCT. No matter how punctual, however, Blue always gives a look of "What are you waiting for? Do I have to call Cat-Abuse to get fed?" The same occurs every morning, even when breakfast is served at 5:45am or 5:40am, 5:30am, whenever. Same Blue gave me one of those looks response. This morning, in an experiment, wake up meal was backed up to 5:06am, I believe, and Blue ate ravenously, without even a "How'd ya do," for may efforts. The hypothesis is that incrementally, cat feeding could be backed up one whole day with no cat thank you. To avoid work that "ought not be did," does anyone know if this experiment has already been done. Wouldn't want to upset Blue's Circadian Rhythms unnecessarily, any less than break my own commitment to not doing work which ought not be did. Of course, if this is epitaph worthy scholarship, encouragement and funding aid appreciated. - EW

Arts Scene: Big Fish Mural, N Main Street, Jamestown, KY

2018-07-20 - North Main Street at Shelby Street, Jamestown, Russell County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
A newly painted mural in Jamestown, KY, the capital of Russell County, defies anyone to ignore it. Many of us have watched with fascination as the art took form. Closer up, it's a study in Christian symbolism of the region. Minute details, like the "I Heart KY," compels one to search for others. Our view was from an air conditioned CRV, too near the Jamestown Police Department headquarters to allow for much lingering, but we'll head back on another lunch hour know-your-county-better-tour to see what other subtle messages are within. In perspective, on the left is the Russell County Library/Jamestown building, on the right can be seen the American Flag at the Doughboy monument, the steeple of the Jamestown Christian Church, and the roofline of the Russell County Courthouse. - EW/LW
