Amy Pike: Does not drink, but will vote Yes to legal sales By Amy Pike As everyone is aware, we have a local option Election on March 22. There is much controversy and debate over this issue. Personally, I am not a drinker. I have no desire to consume alcohol anymore, but I will be voting YES on March 22. Why, you may ask? Alcohol is a perfectly legal substance for you to purchase, consume, and possess if you are over 21 years of age. People are going to consume and purchase it and then come back to Adair Co after spending money elsewhere while going out to eat, shopping, etc. If you want a nice glass of wine with a meal, you have to drive to another county to buy it, and chances are you will eat, shop, etc. while you are there. If you could run to a local store and purchase that same bottle of wine, you would be more likely to spend the other money here as well. It is about Economics. We are allowing our tax money to help support other counties. Why? Some say it is a sin? Is it? I am not a Biblical Scholar by any means, but it is my understanding that it is not consuming alcohol that is a sin; it is the abuse of it. My grandmother was a good Christian lady; yet, she kept a bottle of whiskey in the cabinet for cough syrup. Was that a sin? I don’t think so. You can abuse anything – caffeine, nicotine, over the counter medications, but no one minds those products. It's a form of substance abuse. Gluttony is considered a sin; yet, how many of us sit down to a nice meal and over indulges? I have worked in the Emergency Services field over the course of many years, and I can attest to the fact we have much bigger issues in our county than alcohol. Illegal street drugs and prescription medication abuse is astronomical. I would dare say that from my experience, there are more DUI arrests now on illegal drugs and prescription medication than there are from alcohol. As a mother, the legalization of alcohol is the least of my worries – I am much more concerned with the illegal drugs that are available and fear what new drugs will be out by the time she is a teenager. I want my daughter to be able to find a decent paying job in her hometown if she chooses to stay here and not be forced to move elsewhere for a career or livable wage. Two of the most heavily taxed items are tobacco products and alcohol. It is time for PROGRESS in Adair Co. We are losing money every single day because it is being spent in another county and it will be sold in neighboring Russell Co in just a few short weeks. That is tax money that could help OUR community. I know that the people of Adair County do not believe that by prohibiting alcohol sales that you will prevent consumption and abuse, allowing the sale of it in our county is not going to enable people, simply put it will help regulate it, control it, and the entire county to benefit from the revenue. Look at the FACTS. Progress Adair County has posted information that is fact and can be confirmed. To quote George Bernard Shaw, "Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." If you are a registered voter 18 or older – yes, 18 or older, please do your RESEARCH and join the movement to move Adair County forward and cast your vote for "YES" on March 22. Sincerely, - Amy Pike This story was posted on 2016-02-13 09:31:01
