First-graders learn how to make pinch pots By Calen McKinney, Public Information Officer/Grant Writer Campbellsville Independent Schools (CIS), Campbellsville, KY Campbellsville Elementary School first-graders are making pinch pots. In Adrienne Hash's art classes, students are learning about how art can tell stories and help the viewer learn about other people. They are also learning how art can be functional, such as a pot carrying water. Hash told students about African pottery, in which people use their hands to shape their pots and then use them to cook and store their food. After their lesson, students made their own pinch pots. Students used their thumbs to pinch their clay and then shaped their pots. They then used different patterns to make designs on their pots. When the pots dry, students will decorate them with paint.
