You want a what?

Comments re article 80663 Russell Co KY Memories of Gosser Ridge Green River Knob

By Linda Waggener

JIM, your words took me up north to where I was a right bewildered customer in a country store, but a northern one, and that was the difference. In Sulphur Well KY in the 50s we enjoyed "cold drinks" and in our culturespeak that meant a Coca Cola or a Nehi grape (my favorite) or Orange Crush.

My Dad who rarely traveled away from our farm tried a vacation when I was about ten or so. We went north to visit friends he'd made in the Army. Somewhere in Wisconsin we made a pit stop at a rural store. It looked much like the stores in my own rural area so I wasn't prepared to be made fun of for what I said. I ordered a "cold drink" from the storekeeper behind the counter and got a bug eyed, mocking, "you want a CO-ULD DRINK!?!" followed by laughter of the locals in the store. At this late life stage I'm not even sure if I ever correctly communicated and received what I wanted... simply a Nehi grape ... because they were trying to sell me a "soda pop" and who in Sulphur Well knew what the heck that was?
