Shannon Sexton: Clarifying the use of alcohol tax revenue Shannon Sexton writes Sally, you bring up a valid point. The Kentucky liquor laws are so confusing. They have been put together in piecemeal fashion over the years and really should be simplified in my opinion. I'll try to explain how the revenue is allocated to the best of my ability. Alcohol revenue is by law required to be "spent" on certain things. Those things include administration and enforcement. Policing is one of those expenses. As an example, let's say the Police Department budget is currently $500,000 (for round numbers). Now lets assume the legal sale of alcohol passes this year and we collect $500,000 in revenue. That new alcohol revenue may be used for policing - freeing up the original $500,000 that had been budgeting in prior years. Policing still gets $500,000 (now funded by alcohol) and the city or county respectively would have $500,000 extra to budget toward other things we need, taking some of the burden off the property tax payers. - Shannon SextonComments re article 80295 Sally Kemp wants clarification on alcohol tax use This story was posted on 2016-01-20 18:32:54
