Mr. Reed: Why AC District will not use Non-Traditional program

Decision for 2015-2016 school year: Many - over 40 - KY districts, including Cumberland, Green County, Metcalfe County, Russell County, and Taylor County in local area, will be going to Non-Traditional Instruction - online - instead of changing the school calendar should "Snow Days" occur. Superintendent Alan W. Reed responded to a request and sent the following as the basis for Adair County's Decision not to implement the Non-Traditional School program this year. Public comment, using the reply device with this article, is welcome.

By Alan W. Reed

Non-traditional snow days typically involve sending large packets of work home—not to be opened by the student- unless declared a home work day. The work would then be brought to school and graded. For those with broadband capability at home, the work may be posted on websites and completed. The teachers must then commit to being accessible by phone or other means (Google Meeting, et al) for the entire instructional day.

The opinion of our leadership team, thus far, is that there is no substitute for quality classroom time. For that reason, we will continue the traditional method of making up days. Of course, as technology improves, we may change our minds.
