Meet Your New 2016 Chamber President Ellen Zornes New Chamber President, has been an individual member of the Chamber of Commerce for many years and helped found and develop the Chamber’s first leadership program, L.E.A.D. Adair County. She has been a member of the Chamber Board of Directors for the past three years serving as Vice President for two of those years. Her other current longtime volunteer duties include Adair County Retired Teachers, Adair Heritage Association, Rotary Club and Lake Cumberland Children’s Advocacy Center. She and JD attend Columbia Baptist Church. from December 2015 Columbia/Adair County Chamber Insights Ellen was born in Lexington, Kentucky but didn’t live there until years later when she attended the University of Kentucky (UK). Her father was a Baptist minister so they moved around quite a bit. She spent most of her school years in Henderson, Kentucky with a three-year stint in Baltimore, Maryland then back to Henderson. Although she is not originally from Adair County, she has spent the past 36 years, her adult life, here, in her adopted home of Columbia. Ellen and JD met at UK. After she graduated in 1976 with an Elementary Education degree, they married and stayed in Lexington while JD finished his law degree. Ellen taught in Winchester for two years then in Harlan for one year where JD began law practice with Appalachian Research and Defense Fund (Appal Red). Appal Red is the reason they moved to Columbia. It turned out Ellen was not a mountain girl so when Appal Red opened an office in Columbia, she insisted they move here. JD stayed with Appal Red for a year then went into private practice. Soon after, Cotton and Hunter Durham took him into their law firm where he still practices today. Ellen and JD fell in love with Columbia and decided it was where they wanted to spend the rest of their lives. They have two adult children, Adam and Kyle, who were the third generation to graduate from UK, but now live away from Columbia. Ellen is in her second year of retirement after a 31-year career that spanned three school systems, with 28 years in Adair County. During her varied career she was fortunate to have taught all grade levels, been a principal, and spent the last few years as a district coordinator. She was always very involved with her schools and school activities. After moving to Columbia, it took six years for her to be hired with the school system so during that time she worked for the newspaper, operated a private nursery school and daycare, ran a balloon business and was able to be a stay at home mom. Ellen has always been a community volunteer, even in high school at Henderson County High where she helped put together one of the state’s first March of Dimes Walk-A-Thons. She guesses it was only natural that when she retired she would take on community volunteering with a vengeance. As she jokingly says, she didn’t want to be bored with retirement. Ellen has been an individual member of the Chamber of Commerce for many years and helped found and develop the Chamber’s first leadership program, L.E.A.D. Adair County.
