The Beshear Years: Administration investments in Adair County County transportation projects total $49 million, $2 million in agriculture funding Gov. Steve Beshear's Communications Office Throughout his administration, Gov. Steve Beshear has worked with local communities, like Adair County, to increase job creation, raise education standards and support healthy, vibrant families to strengthen the quality of life across the Commonwealth. In Adair County, he has made lasting investments that will benefit generations to come, including $49 million in transportation projects, $2 million in agriculture funding and nearly $2.7 million in community development projects. "When I took office as Governor in 2007, Kentuckians had lost faith in their government and a global recession was taking away jobs, homes and health care," Gov. Beshear said. "Today, thanks to our partnership with a lot of people, including the citizens and officials of Adair County, Kentucky's economy is setting records, and our families are again getting high return on the money and trust they invest in their leaders." Kentucky's unemployment rate is at 5 percent, down from nearly 11 percent during the depths of the recession. Kentucky's jobless rate has not been this low in more than 14 years. In Adair County, the unemployment rate stands at 6.3 percent. "Through our ongoing partnership with local officials in Adair County, we have been able to make numerous critical investments to improve the quality of life for this community," Gov. Beshear said. In Adair County, prior to Medicaid expansion, the uninsured rate was 20.2 percent; now it's an estimated 2.6 percent, an 87 percent reduction. Besides consumers, Kentucky's medical providers, such as hospitals, pharmacies, and primary care physicians, have had the most noticeable, immediate positive impact of Medicaid expansion through the influx of new dollars. Since 2014, new Medicaid expansion payments to Adair County providers totaled more than $7.76 million. Since 2014, total payments to Westlake Regional Hospital, excluding Disproportionate Share Hospital payments, totaled more than $1.17 million. The Adair County area is also seeing an increase in tourism. Adair County's 2014 tourism economic impact was $11.1 million, a 2 percent increase from the previous year.
