5th 4-H Country Ham Auction is 5 Nov 2015

By Tony Rose

The Adair County 4-H Program will be hold its 5th 4-H Country Ham Auction that will take place on Thursday, November 5, 2015, starting at 7pmCT at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. The ham auction will take place following the 4-H Awards Banquet.

All the hams that will be auction off have been produced by local 4-H youth who participated in the 2015 4-H Ham Project. As part of the project each youth had to cure two country hams and these were placed in the Adair County 4-H Ham House in January. Then in May the youth cleaned and placed the hams back in for aging. Next in August the youth cleaned their hams and entered them in the Kentucky State Fair. As part of the project not only were the hams judge but each youth had to give a three to five minute speech on a topic about Country hams at the State Fair. The youth may choose to keep both hams or auction off one of their hams.

Proceeds from the ham auction will be divided as follows: 80 percent of the total proceeds will be equally divided between the youth who auction off hams.

10 percent of the total proceeds will go to a Country Ham scholarship. Each year a graduating senior who participates in the ham project may apply. Up to two $250.00 scholarship will be awarded.

10 percent of total proceeds will go back to support the hams project for needed supplies, etc.

We hope you will help support our local 4-H youth by participating in our 5th 4-H Country Ham auction. Just show up just before 7pmCT, on November 5 to participate. Rumor has it that the hams are very tasty this year so don’t miss out.- Tony Rose
