Don't say MF at the dinner table in front of 91-year-old mom By Linda Waggener There were three groups lunching about a dozen feet apart. Mom and I represented one of the groups. Across the way, two women lunched at another table and in the corner were three booths of men in work clothes who looked like they were just in off the job. The men, over enormous plates of fried chicken with all the fixins, were sharing stories and experiences back and forth that resulted in frequent uproarious laughter. Other than to make eye contact and grin at each other when the men's bursts of giggles and guffaws couldn't be ignored, Mom and I were chatting and didn’t pay attention to individual statements. However, the other table of two must have heard something that disturbed them. When the men began dumping their paper plates and cups and heading for exits, the younger of the two women stopped one of the men by raising her hand and proceeded to give him a stern lecture. She told him, now it’s fine for you men to talk and laugh and be boisterous, but you don’t say MF in front of my 91-year-old mother (gesturing across the table), that is totally unacceptable. Those men who'd been lingering split and the one who was caught by the protective daughter was nodding, backing away and apologizing as he tried to get out of the line of fire. After the exit door closed behind him, the 91-year-old woman looked over at Mom and me with a grin and a glint in her eye and said, “I can’t take her anywhere.” This story was posted on 2015-10-25 11:26:00
