Where do we go from here for our schools? By Ralph Waggener Personal commentary by the editor/publisher, It's Just for a Smile News It's time to move on and all school board members need to work together for the betterment of the students. In our past, too often something like this brings on dividing lines and we start a division of us and them. The FFA backers have done well by Superintendent Reed in that a lot of what is taught under FFA is done with the new satellite school which offers welding and other hands on skills essential to agriculture business. FFA has been a great part if our education system and should be honored as such. The Adair Band has been a top performer for many years and as such did not get as much money spent on it as it should have been; but Mr. Reed has focused on the other things which have not been doing so well. The buildings and grounds have been neglected for years with small budgets to keep them in good repair, something former grounds keeper Ricky Bault was really proud to be a part of: starting better care of the property with a better budget to do it with. I have been in the printing business for about 40 years, and I have learned that you repair machines when needed; the same for land. Well maintained buildings last longer when you keep them up. Some of our old school buildings where not built well, to start with, and if anyone thinks that they understand the Kentucky Education Department's Division of Buildings and Grounds, they are far past genius! I do not understand the high cost of building a school building, set by Buildings and Grounds Division; the red tape just doesn't make any sense to me. The teachers have to abide by laws and instructions from The Kentucky Department of Education, right or wrong; Mr. Reed nor anyone can do much about the costs brought on our local system by the state. Alan Reed has done a lot and yes, there is more to do. Rome was not built in one day; it had to start one building at a time. It's hard to understand why a new Band Building was not the first on the agenda, but had if it have been, another building program would have been delayed and some other department would be mad! The improvements Superintendent Reed has made to our school, as a whole has been outstanding, quite a feat for anyone to perform. When you do 10 things - or say 10 programs - and you get even 4 of them completely right you are good; if you get all ten right you are beyond genus! I hope what Alan Reed has done for education here in Adair is just a starter, and that whoever follows him will carry on this work and to continue to settle for nothing but the best. Our students have been demonstrating a fervor to excel, with wins in all kinds of competition. The FFA members have shown well at the Kentucky State Fair with a pile of wins, and yes, FFA is very important to our community! Working together we all win; working against each other we all lose! Columbia and Adair County make a wonderful community. A place I was never more proud to call home than when the news came that the board had voted to stay with a winning program. - Ralph Roy Waggener This story was posted on 2015-09-26 12:00:51
