Gerald Doss: Bought own books in the 1950s The Superintendent's contract renewal issue Gerald Doss writes: Ed, I went to high school in the fifties and we had to buy our own books. I'm sure you did also. So when did the superintendent become responsible for kids not having books? If we needed supplies, we went and bought them. The super has never furnished books and supplies that I know of - I bought things like that for my kids when they went to school. - Gerald DossThanks Gerald Doss - I do remember buying books in high school - and selling them to the next class when I was through. In graded school, the books were furnished. We live in a different age, where many books are available online to students. A problem with that is that forbidden annotations in the books were useful historical resources. Ups and downs of romances could be traced all the way to marriage there. My favorite inscription was a girl's inscription, "I love (name of boy) for every and always." which I stole to write to Linda on occasion, "I love Linda Reid Marcum for every and always." - EW This story was posted on 2015-09-20 05:37:13
