James Ray Gaskins, 84, Adair County, KY (1930-2015)

Mr. Gaskins attended the New Hope Separate Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a farmer. He was a member of a very large, highly respected Northeast Adair County, KY family. He was the son of the late Alvin Reed & Mary Ann Williams Gaskins. His wife of 62 years, Jessie M. Burton Gaskins, survives. He leaves 15 direct living descendants.

James Ray Gaskins age 84 years of the Ella Community of Adair Co. KY passed away Sunday, August 23, 2015 at 3:25pmCT, at the Westlake Regional Hospital Emergency Room in Columbia, KY.

Funeral service Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 1pmCT, at New Hope Separate Baptist Church, 10671 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. With Bro. David Coffey, Bro. Vitis Bailey and Bro. Dennis Roberts, the officiating clergy. Interment in New Hope Cemetery, 131 New Hope Cemetery Road, Columbia, KY, with full Military Honors by Columbia VFW Post 6097. Visitation after 3:30pmCT, Tuesday, August 25, 2015, & after 6amCT, Wednesday until 11:30amCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY and after 12pmNoonCT, at the New Hope Separate Baptist Church.



Pallbearers Terry Roberts, Doug Gaskins, James Ralph Roberts, Ruben Timple, Scott Stargel and Brandon Breeding.

Honorary Pallbearers: Phillip Gaskins, Charles Neat, Travis Bryant, Dale Gaskins and Bobby Roberts.


James Ray Gaskins, 84, Adair County, KY (1930-2015)


He was born on September 5, 1930 in Adair County, KY. He was the son of the late Alvin Reed & Mary Ann Williams Gaskins. He died Sunday, August 23, 2015, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 18 days.

He was preceded in death by two daughters Kathy Jean Gaskins Grant on October 30, 2009 & Karen Anne Gaskins in 1962; Three brothers, Paul Gaskins & two infant brothers; two sisters, Elva Inis Gaskins Stroup & Unema Gaskins Roberts.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jessie M. Burton Gaskins of Columbia, KY, and the following:
  • One son: Kenneth D. Gaskins & his wife Lou Ann of Columbia, KY

  • Two daughters: Joan M. Gaskins & Susan Breeding of Columbia, KY

  • Son-in-law: Earl Grant of Columbia, KY

  • One brother: Ruben E. Gaskins of Campbellsville, KY

  • Two sisters: Opal Temple of Kokomo, Indiana & Geneva Workman ofLouisville, KY

  • Five grandchildren: Barry Scott Stargel, Tonya Renee Grant Feese & her husband James; Janella Rae Grant Miller & her husband Brian; Cameron Wade Grant, and Brandon Keith Breeding

  • Seven great grandchildren: Diamond Sanita Stargel, Trayton Scott Stargel, Kiley Feese, James Grant Feese, Calvin Adam Miller, Kathyryn A. Miller, and Canyon Miller

  • Several nieces, nephews & a host of other relatives and friends
