Great American Dulcimer Convention at Pine Mtn. Sept. 25-26 By Anne MacFie Pineville, KY - Pine Mountain State Resort Park will be where dulcimer players and lovers from across the country will gather Sept. 25-26 for the 39th annual Great American Dulcimer Convention (GADC). The Appalachian dulcimer is a sweet-sounding string instrument played on the lap. Similarly named but unrelated is the many-stringed hammered dulcimer, which dates back to ancient times. Both types are spotlighted in the convention's concerts by professional musicians and in workshops, open stage opportunities and jams open to all. Entertaining and teaching mountain dulcimer will be: Aaron O'Roarke, an accomplished young player from Florida; Neal Hellman, for 30 years a nationally acclaimed performer and instructor; Nancy Barker and Josh Noe, a teacher/former student duo from Bardstown, Kentucky; and Anne MacFie (formerly Albin), balladeer, songwriter and director of the GADC. Representing the hammered dulcimer are Christie Burns of Chattanooga, Tennessee and the Louisville Old Time and Americana band, Skipjack. There will be concerts on Friday and Saturday beginning at 8pmET. Tickets are $10 a person. Free workshops and jam sessions will be offered during the day Saturday. Pine Mountain's Frontier Night Buffet will be offered Saturday from 5-9 p.m. and will include roasted wild boar, chicken and dumplings, buffalo meatloaf, buffalo chili, elk stew, fried catfish and more. The cost is $27 a person. The park is offering packages that include two nights lodging, both concerts and the Saturday buffet for $219.85 plus tax for two people. (The cost for one is $178.90 plus tax) Information about tickets, lodging, dining and a special GADC weekend package from Pine Mountain State Resort Park is available by calling 800-325-1712. The park has a 30-room lodge, cottages and a full-service restaurant. It also has a golf course and other recreational opportunities for guests.
