First Bridge in Stephens Administration goes to District 5

Span will cost approximately $116,000. Will be built by County Road Dept.

By Ed Waggener

The first bridge/culvert built in the Administration of CJE Michael D. Stephens will be in Billy Dean Coffey's Magisterial District 5, on Theron Akin Road, two-tenths off KY 76, near Tarter's Chapel United Methodist Church.

Deputy Judge Executive Holly Grimsley said the Adair County Road Department will construct the bridge and that actual work on the project will begin as soon as an application to construct the span clears the Energy and Environment Cabinet.

Grimsley estimated that time for the application to be approved at approximately 45 days. A public notice in ColumbiaMagazine.com, starting July 31, 2017, gives details.

She said that construction should be completed in this calendar year. And that costs have been estimated at $116,000. At least 80% of the span's cost will be funded by the state, she said, depending on which program the state designates for the project.

The county has approximately 80 bridges and culverts. In the prior administration's eight years, 20 new bridges were constructed, and average of 2.5 per year. The pace is largely dependent on funding availability. County bridges are funded almost entirely with State Funds.
