Time to rethink Ralph Waggener's low dollar Eastern bypass?

A solution suggested over two decades ago would really help now.

By Ed Waggener
Personal Commentary

In the early days of Columbia! Magazine, the print version, we ran a story about the bypass need for Adair County.

It was obvious then, it is obvious now, that the the most important bypass remains the lowest cost one of all - the bit over 2 miles of Parkway from KY 55/KY 551 to approximately the 51-52 mile marker on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway east of Columbia. At the time, the Kentucky Highway Department estimated that it would carry 60% of the traffic then fed onto the Public Square, versus the 40% headed west.

Ralph came up with a very low cost alternative to start an Eastern Bypass: Just utilize Oak Street to Wain Street, or, better yet, extend Oak Street around the Russell Creek side of the Fairgrounds to connect to KY 206/Liberty road, install a 4 way stop at that intersection, and feed traffic east to the Russell Springs Road/KY 80 E. Travellers could then travel KY 80 East and access the parkway in Russell Springs or, an interchange and access road could be built on the East side of Columbia, KY.

It was an economical solution to an 75 year old problem. Perhaps it's time to reconsider it now. Heck, it seems small enough with so huge a return on investment that the County/City could build it. - EW
