Remembering Edgar Holmes: The story of the Prayer Rock  Tiffany Kessler has written many stories of people's lives. Edgar Holmes, 94, Adair County, KY (1921-2015) By Tiffany Hadley Kessler Having spent several years writing for newspapers, I learned early on I'm not much for covering arrests, car accidents, or court cases. My favorite has always been telling the life stories of others. Over a decade ago I was asked to write a story on Edgar Holmes, a local WWII and Korean War veteran. I scheduled the interview and I remember he pulled up in his older model car (which he often used as a wheelchair due to the difficulty he had getting around) and said "hop in". Having just met him I had no clue where we were going, but something about this mild mannered man and his sweet blue eyes left me in complete trust. He took me to the Green County line where he once lived and showed me his prayer rock. Not an altar, simply a large, waist high stone, surrounded by peace and nature, that he had used as a sacred place for many years to talk to God. "Others have used this place to pray too," he said looking toward the heavens. Mr. Holmes life story was a great one. He explained to me with tear-filled eyes, "Three times throughout our lifetime together my wife told me she would wait for me...the first was when I left to fight in WWII, once again when I was called up for the Korean War, and the last time just before she passed away." Over time, I have forgotten many of the stories I've written. But not Mr. Holmes. Still seeing and talking to him in town, we always joked about our birthdays being on the same day, just 60 years a part. I am so blessed our paths crossed in this lifetime. I heard he passed away in his sleep last night. I am confident he was met with the good Lord's words "well done thy good and faithful servant". This story was posted on 2015-06-24 10:53:28
