Specialists With Arts Tactics application deadline is June 30
SWAT program assists Art Teachers by providing guidance from an arts expert at no cost to the teacher
Kentucky Arts Council
FRANKFORT, KY (18 Jun 2015) -- The educational standards for teaching the arts, like its sister disciplines math, science and literature, can sometimes be difficult for teachers to navigate. The Kentucky Arts Council's Specialists With Arts Tactics program can help teachers make sense of those standards and develop curricula to achieve the best student achievement.
Specialists With Arts Tactics pairs professional arts educators with schools in need of a consultancy on developing an arts curriculum in their schools. The deadline for applying for these consultancy grants is June 30, 2015.
"Considering the recent adoption of the new Kentucky Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities, Specialists With Arts Tactics provides an excellent way to get implementation guidance from an arts expert at no cost to the teacher," said Philip Shepherd, manager of the academic core branch in the department of education's division of program standards.
Lisa Huddleston, principal of Livingston County Middle School, said the Specialists With Arts Tactics consultancy her school completed with literary consultant Constance Alexander was instrumental in improving student scores and making teachers more comfortable with the literacy portion of the state's arts education standards.
"Our Specialists With Arts Tactics consultant wanted to ensure teachers received useful professional learning. She conducted a pre- and post-survey of their needs. She used the pre-survey data to design her professional learning and used the post-survey feedback to give the administrative team direction for future trainings," Huddleston said. "As a direct result of her work with us, we streamlined our writing plan, developed a schoolwide editing protocol, and improved staff ability to conduct student conferencing to improve writing tasks."
For more information on Specialists With Arts Tactics consultancies, contact Jean St. John, arts education program director, at email@example.com or 502-564-3757, ext. 486.
The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, fosters environments for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. The arts council, along with the NEA, is celebrating 50 years of service in 2015, which the arts council is recognizing as the Year of the Arts in Kentucky.
