Congratulations Graduates, Our Next Generation of Capable Leaders

Congratulations and happy graduation to all high school and college graduates. We honor your hard work and accomplishments and wish each continued success. Whether a high school graduate entering college, technical training, the military or entering the work world, or a college graduate transitioning into an advance degree, the military, or into the job market, you are continuing to grow in experiences and knowledge.

Your graduation is a great achievement, but you have not reached your destination. Graduation is an important step to the next step. The journey of learning, education and training isn't ending with graduation.

Life is always evolving and filled with endless opportunities and experiences. In today's society graduates must be adaptive, open to rapid change, continued learning, and embrace a global perspective. Unlike parents and grandparents, graduates can expect to have 15 or more jobs in their work careers.

The first job of today's graduate will most likely be substantially different from the second, and other jobs held during their lifetime. Education and experiences thus far have provided graduates with the knowledge and skills to continue lifelong learning to enrich their lives, and to adapt and learn new skills to meet the demands of the ever changing job market. The future will be powered not just by knowledge, but also by other attributes, including a strong work ethic, integrity, communication skills, teamwork, innovation, and the ability to thrive in an international economy.

As a graduate, whatever your path, these tried and true steps will help ensure success:
  1. Believe in yourself and take charge of your destiny.
  2. There is no easy out, you have to do the work to gain the rewards; make a plan and commit your time, actions, best efforts, and perseverance to achieve your goals and dreams.
  3. Show up, be prepared and do your best no matter the task.
  4. Embrace Lifelong Learning and self-improvement.
  5. You define who you are so be responsible for your actions, respect yourself and guard your good character.
  6. Cultivate the ability to think for yourself and stand for your beliefs.
  7. Cherish, appreciate and spend time with friends and family.
  8. It's not all about you, give back.
  9. Respect the world and the people in it.
  10. Life is unfair, do and be your best anyway.
  11. You will fail, but don't give up; failure helps pave the way to success.
  12. Live with passion, enjoy life! Work hard and give your work your best efforts, but don't make work your life.
Research shows those with a college degree or technical training is more likely to be employed and make substantially more money than high school graduates. A highly educated and skilled workforce builds a stronger Columbia and Adair County by attracting more industry and better paying jobs to our community. Not only benefiting the quality of life for graduates, but also providing the tax revenues to improve services, decrease crime and offer better community living conditions.

The economic and public well-being of our community, state, nation and world is soon transitioning to the leadership of our graduates' capable hands, a responsibility that is not to be taken lightly. Graduates, be active in the community, the state, the nation and the world and advocate and work to improve human and economic conditions. Seek to understand other perspectives, be willing to change to embrace a better way, when the change aligns with your values. But, first and foremost, live your life with integrity and be true to your values.

Graduates, you are among the most fortunate in the world, having the opportunity to gain an education, high school or college. Graduates, to whom much is given, much is expected, so pay forward by helping and inspiring other young people to gain the education and skills necessary to be successful. And as a community, we have an obligation to continue to support our young graduates to continue their education, mentor them to be successful in the workforce and in our community.

Provide positive guidance, support and motivation to young people still in the education realm, those entering the work force, and those in the community who need help deciding the course to take. Be willing to help young adults discover their best fit in the business world, invite a young person to shadow in the work world, be patient with young people as they learn. Remember we didn't know all we know in one day.

Graduates soak up the recognition of your accomplishments and pat yourself on the back for your hard work and perseverance. Look back with respect and awe of how far you've come, but look to the future with excitement and hope for the opportunities and experiences before you. Recognize and appreciate those who have nurtured, protected and supported you along your journey. The adventures that lie ahead of each graduate will deepen your character, reveal strengths and weaknesses, measure the capability to overcome obstacles, deepen passions and enable you to develop self-understanding and find your missions in life.

Graduates don't be satisfied with the status quo, continue to learn and gain more knowledge, skills and wisdom to better yourself, and society. Now go forth and make your mark on the world and embrace this new found freedom with responsibility and accountability.

Pay it forward to those you meet along your journey. The future is bright with such capable next generation leaders. - Brenda Mann, President, Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce, 201 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY. Phone 270-384-6020
