Ed, thank you for acknowledging the Adair County Garden Club in your article.

The club works at the Trabue house every Wednesday morning with an average of 40 volunteer hours per month.

The roses have been beautiful this year.

The club takes care of several areas around the community, one being the Trabue gardens, the flower beds around the square, and the entrance and emergency room areas of the hospital.

We have recently started we working on a project for the library, more to come later on that project. If you want to get involved please call Donna Jones at 270-634-2125.

The heritage structure has a commanding view of Downtown Columbia, this one from the sundial in the Julia Miller Horton Rose Garden. With the help of the good Lord and volunteers from the Adair County Garden Club, the roses are more beautiful today than they've ever been. The TRH is owned and maintained, with the help also of volunteers by the City of Columbia. - EW

Plaque, Julia Miller Horton Memorial Rose Garden

2015-05-22 - Trabue-Russell House, 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
For those of us who remember the establishment of the Julia Miller Horton Memorial Rose Garden by her husband, Dr. John Burns Horton, it seems like only yesterday. In fact, the garden will have its 38th birthday next month. The gardens have had, over the years, some rocky periods, but now, thanks to volunteer work by the Adair County Garden Club, it is thriving once again. It's a community treasure, owned and operated by the City of Columbia, and that thanks to philanthropist Jim Blair.

The Trabue-Russell House's stunning Honeysuckle Bush

2015-05-22 - 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Columbians share a passion for this almost whimsical cultivation of an oft-despised, frequently tortured plant which gives so many of us so much pleasure. We suspect, but haven't found out for sure, who nurtures this Honeysuckle Vine shaped into an ornamental bush at the Trabue-Russell House on Jamestown Street. (We'd like to know who originally thought to do this, to thank them for their vision). It presents a pleasing aspect to the Memorial Day glimpse of the preservation of historic residences in this neighborhood. On the right is the a glimpse of home of the late Dr. Oris & Jessie Aaron. The flag, appropriately accented with red geraniums, is the home of Columbia City Councillor Dr. Ron and his wife Gayle Rogers, and, just beyond, the home of Della Shaw. The honeysuckle bush and the Trabue Russell House reminds me of the days when I provided something of a Greyline tour of Columbia for prospective physicians and nurse practioners. Coming over Jamestown Hill, I could predict what each would say when they caught sight of the Historic Adair County Courthouse - "That's the most beautiful public building I ever saw." That fits in with maybe the primary purpose my wife, Linda and I had when Columbia! Magazine and its successor, ColumbiaMagazine.com was established: Economic Development in its truest sense, and in its most economical mode. Preservation and cultural aspects are so important if we want real Economic Development. - EW
