Paige Coomer receives prestigious Peggy Browning Fellowship Paige Coomer has completed her IL year at IU's Maurer School of Law. She is a graduate of Adair County High School and Centre College. She will spend the fellowship working in the Legal Department of the United Mine Workers of America in Triangle, VA. The application process is highly competitive, and the award is a tribute to her outstanding qualifications. Paige is the daughter of Steve & Lou Anne Coomer, Columbia, KY, and a first- year student at Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, IN. In 2015, the Peggy Browning Fund will support nearly 80 public interest labor law fellowships nationwide. With more than 400 applicants from 150 participating law schools, securing a Peggy Browning Fellowship is not an easy task. Peggy Browning Fellows are distinguished students who have not only excelled in law school but who have also demonstrated their previous educational, work, volunteer and personal experiences. Paige Coomer certainly fits this description. Paige graduated Phi Beta Kappa, at Centre College. Her longstanding interest in serving the needs of underprivileged citizens led her to pursue a degree in law. A particularly transformative experience for Paige occurred during her internship with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, where her work with coal miners in Eastern Kentucky developed her interest in the intersection between poverty and workers' rights. Upon graduation, Paige hopes to build upon her past work with miners, activists, and disadvantaged citizens by using the law to advocate for traditionally underrepresented groups. At IU, Paige is actively involved with public interest groups and serves as a 1L Representative. Recently Paige started working as a professor's assistant to study the impact of deep sea mining on Pacific communities. In her spare time she enjoys journaling, modern dance, and reading (mostly non-law related) fiction. The Peggy Browning Fund is a not for-profit organization established in memory of Margaret A. Browning, a prominent union-side attorney who was a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) from 1994 until 1997. Peggy Browning Fellowships provide law students with unique, diverse and challenging work experiences fighting for social and economic justice. These experiences encourage and inspire students to pursue careers in public interest labor law. Peggy Browning Fund website: www.peggybrowningfund.org. This story was posted on 2015-05-10 11:07:50
