C/AC Community Garden announces 2015 garden rental plan

By Mike Bosela

Do you want to grow your own fresh produce, but as part of a community of gardeners? This is your chance! The Columbia-Adair County Community Garden has a variety of raised bed garden plots (8 x 8 foot in dimension) that are available for rental for the 2015 Season, from May 15-October 15.

Subscribers (renters) will be provided with a variety of seeds and plants for use in their plots; with an estimated retail value of $25 dollar, as well as with access to a shared set of garden tools, fertilizers, and soil amendments; e.g., compost, peat, etc.

During the "Garden Work Days" which are offered twice a week (on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings), garden staff will be available to answer gardening-related questions and to assist subscribers who are elderly or handicapped with the planting and maintenance of their plots.

All of this (land rental, plants, social interaction, and gardening assistance) is available for just $35 per year. In addition, individuals or families who fall below the federal poverty level are eligible for financial assistance to cover costs of rental via garden voucher program of the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency.

The Community Garden is located beside the Columbia United Methodist Church, at the intersection of West Guardian and Monroe Streets. The location is convenient (two blocks from the old courthouse) and excellent for gardening with fertile soil, good light exposure, and access to city water.

Plots will be rented on a first come basis. Application forms are available from either of the garden coordinators, Mike Bosela (boselam@lindsey.edu, 270-384-8192) and/or Noel Wilson (wilsonn@lindsey.edu, 270-384-7375). The application deadline is Friday May 15, 2015. The garden season will officially open the following Monday (May 18). Plants and seeds will be distributed and we will have a cookout to mark the occasion.
