News from the Adair County Elementary School

Many times in life we have people who come and go. It is rare when you have a friend that you keep in contact with from childhood, well into your adult life. Not due to any issues but just life gets too busy. Well not for Carla Perkins and Lesley Goodwin.

The started writing each other as pen pals when they 12 years old. Carla of course is from Columbia, KY, born and raised, and now the Technology Director at Adair County Schools.

Lesley is from Scotland, where she was born and raised. She become an educator and teaches at Minard Primary, in Argyll Scotland. Through the years, Carla and Lesley's friendship has grown from snail mail, then phone calls and emails, and now Facebook and texting. Yet, they had never meet in person.

On April 3, 2015, Lesley and her husband John came to Kentucky to meet Carla and her husband Tim. Carla and Tim have spent the last two weeks showing them Kentucky and Tennessee.

But the finale of her visit was when Carla took her to Adair County Elementary School last Thursday.

Lesley meet students from the 3rd grade and delivered letters from her own students. They talked about her and Carla's friendship and she told the students all about her school and Scotland.

The children were totally engaged and Lesley took names and ages of students who wanted to write through their teachers to students from Scotland. The students asked a thousand questions and soon discovered their counterparts in Scotland lead lives very similar to their own.

At the end of the day, Lesley presented ACES with a plaque and flag from Minard Elementary and wanted to thank Superintendent Reed, ACES Principal Steve Burton, Asst. Principal Sandy Wilson, Staff members Alice Curry, Patricia Aaron, and Cindy Smith for their warm welcome and the presents for her students that they presented her with.

Carla and Lesley will of course remain lifelong friends. Now there friendship has a new dimension. Carla and Tim are hopeful they will be able to spend a couple of weeks with Lesley and John sometime in the future.

It just shows what can happen if you put forth the effort to make a relationship last. What better lesson for our youth to learn - personally, I can think of none. - Shamarie Claiborne, Media Publicity Coordinator, Adair County School District
