Happy Tail: Smokey the cat brought new energy to Sugarfoot

Sugarfoot Farm is about dogs and horses. But a cat, Smokey, reluctantly taken in, has livened up the place, entertaining the Peg and Keith and the gentlemanly Darryl, and is appreciated even more by the dogs, especially the latest set of puppies in residence at Sugarfoot. Peg writes: 'Smokey has found his niche. He's the best playmate in the world for the puppies. He entertains the seniors in the room and keeps them young. And I never know what trick he's got up his sleeve for me. He's our full time comedian.'

By Peg Schaeffer

Our neighbors called us one morning. A cat had shown up at their house and they were worried their dogs would hurt it. They asked if they could bring it to the farm. Normally I don't take in cats but I made an exception this time. Their kids showed up at the gate with a gray cat they had named "Smokey." Smokey appeared to be about six months old. I took him downstairs and put him in the cat room.

We have a large room in the cellar with a bay window so there's plenty of light. The room is furnished for the cats' comfort. There's a cat condo, scratching post, and a dresser where their food dishes are. In the summer it's the only room in the house with air conditioning. In the winter they have a heat lamp to lie under.

Until Smokey, the only Sugarfoot cats were Star and Socks

We have two senior dogs in the room also. Bonnie and Gertie enjoy the quiet of the room. Until Smokey, there were only two other cats in the room, Star and Socks. They are seniors and also very quiet. So the room was very peaceful - that was until Smokey. He brought an energy to that room that was well needed. He loves to play and would bother the other two cats until their only recourse was to play with him.

Whenever I feed the cats and dogs in the room Darryl and two other dogs always help.

Smokey loves to wrestle with small dogs Paco and Molly

The other two dogs, Paco and Molly, are small dogs not much bigger than Smokey. He loves to see them coming. He wrestles with them, wrapping all four legs around them and biting them on the head at the same time.

They in turn chew at him and rough house back. Sometimes it seems to me that they're being too rough but the rougher it is, the more Smokey loves it. He can get out of the way anytime but choses to continue playing.

He'll climb to the top of the cat condo and then hangs his tail over the side, swishing it slowly back and forth. The dogs will jump and try to catch his tail but his timing is always perfect, moving it out of their reach just in the nick of time.

Smokey never tires of tricks on dog buddies

His favorite trick is to hide under the utility table. The dogs' waterer is next to the table and when they get close Smokey will dip his paw in the water and flick it in their face. He never tires of that trick. I had gotten the dogs a rubber chew toy that was a fish. One day I couldn't help but laugh. When I went in the room the fish was in the water bowl. I'm sure Smokey had something to do with that. We got a litter of puppies in and put them in the cat room. Gertie and Bonnie didn't appreciate it at all that these youngsters were sharing the room with them.

Smokey thought he'd died and gone to heaven with arrival of puppies

At least Star and Socks could get out of their reach. Smokey thought he'd died and gone to heaven. He now has four playmates that are in the room all the time. In the beginning the best part was that they were smaller than him. They're growing fast and are now bigger than him.

The puppies love their playmate.

They bounce on Smokey, pull his tail, chew on his ears and he just lays there and swats them. At first when he wanted to escape from their antics he could jump on the cat condo but they've gotten bigger and will climb the condo after him. That doesn't bother him. He'll go to the top and when they can just about reach him he'll just jump on the floor. Then they climb back down and he goes back up. They never get tired of this trick.

Smokey has found his niche

Smokey has found his niche. He's the best playmate in the world for the puppies. He entertains the seniors in the room and keeps them young. And I never know what trick he's got up his sleeve for me. He's our full time comedian.

Smokey the cat brought new energy to Sugarfoot

Smokey was reluctantly admitted to Sugarfoot, which is dedicated to Dogs and Horses. But when the family said they were afraid their dogs would eat Smokey, Peg Schaeffer's big heart melted. He joined the family and added new energy to the sanctuary. He's found his niche. New puppies have just arrived. "He's the best playmate in the world for the puppies. He entertains the seniors in the room and keeps them young. And I never know what trick he's got up his sleeve for me. He's our full time comedian," she writes.
