LWC Theatre to showcase of one act plays 9-10 Apr 2015

Plays are student directed, and include original student works

News from Lindsey Wilson College

COLUMBIA, KY - The artistic visions of Lindsey Wilson College theatre students will be on the stage on Thursday & Friday nights, April 9-10, 2015. The students will present 11 one-act plays in V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY. The two-night showcase begins at 7pmCT each night, is free and open to the public.

The two-night showcase will feature one-act plays by established playwrights as well as original works by LWC students.

LWC student Suzie Herrington of Dearborn, MI, who is directing American playwright William Mastrosimone's Precipice, said the experience has taught her a lot about how to develop an artistic vision.

"It's been really fun, I've enjoyed it a lot," Herrington said. "It has its difficulties, but once everyone is in the same place, it's a lot of fun and a really good experience."

Herrington, who is performed in several LWC productions, said being a director has given her a better understanding of "everything a director has to do."

"Sometimes it can be kind of overwhelming as a director because at first you think being a director is just telling actors what to do, but in reality you have a lot more responsibility."

LWC student Chelsea Pike of Campbellsville, KY, is directing the debut of A Director's Vision, written by fellow LWC theatre student Erika Finley of Hopkinsville, KY.

Pike said that she's discovered that trust is one of the more important qualities a director can possess.

"You have to trust the actors to be as committed to the play as you are as a director," she said.

Herrington and Pike said they've both learned that the best productions are the result of a collaborative process between actors and the director. But it's also important for the director to maintain their artistic vision.

"I had one of my actors say, 'I want to play this character British.' And you just look at them and say, 'No, because this is my vision as a director.' So you compromise," Pike said.
