Paddlefish harvest questionnaire now online Access the questionnaire directly at https://www.research.net/s/KYPaddlefish By: Lee McClellan FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is seeking input from those who bow fish or snag for paddlefish. "The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service requested more information on paddlefish populations in Kentucky," said Ron Brooks, director of fisheries for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "One of the areas we are lacking information is the extent of bow fishing and snag fishing harvest." Brooks said the fisheries division is in favor of creating a free paddlefish permit system to help gather information on paddlefish harvested by bow fishing or snagging. In order to receive comments concerning the proposed system, the fisheries division will place a questionnaire on the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife homepage at fw.ky.gov to be completed by paddlefish anglers. The questionnaire will also have additional information concerning the proposed permit system. "Several other states currently have a similar system and found it to be beneficial to their ability to assess paddlefish information in their states," Brooks said. "It will also help us better identify the level of paddlefish harvest." Brooks explained this effort is to help Kentucky Fish and Wildlife determine if current regulations adequately protect the paddlefish population. "Paddlefish numbers have declined in some areas of the country and are considered in decline in others," he said. "We hope to use this free permit system to provide the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with the information needed to prevent similar circumstances for paddlefish in Kentucky."
