Reminder: Leave water running during extreme cold

By: Bob Barnes

With the impeding record low temperatures at our door a few reminders of how to keep your family running water.

It is always to leave a faucet running both hot and cold water at the far ends of your house. The steam can be the size of pencil. This is especially important if you live in a house trailer. Heat bulbs and heat tapes will be a must on the incoming water service under the house trailer.

Most people have no idea on how to turn off the main water service. After frozen pipes have frozen and burst there will be a need to turn off the water when the pipes thaw out. Show family members where this shut off valve is located.

It is probably too late to remind people to remove the garden hose from the outside hydrant that it attaches to. If it hasn't been done yet be sure to disconnect. If one has sinks located on outside or exterior walls open the cabinet or vanity doors to allow heat to help those water lines from freezing.

Most water meters in your yard are deep enough that they will not freeze. However, if the lid is broken one my want to place a bale of hay or straw over the broken lid. The meters will freeze and burst if cold air blows on the meter.

If you have outside pets please provide shelter for them. Our four legged friends have pads that will get frost bite. Also make sure they have access to fresh water and food. They would greatly appreciate even a cardboard box and blankets placed out of the elements.

There is a bit of expense for leaving your water running for hours at a time but the expense to repair will more than likely be higher. Also, the inconvenience of not having water a few days can be avoided! Stay warm my friends!
